Vanity

Despite its meaning, this word has remained my favorite since 6th grade because of its cool and smooth sound, like stainless steel.

Vociferous

This is a vicious-sounding word. If you are vociferous, you qualify to have the phrase “Turn that racket down!” used on you. It sounds like it would be some brutal executioner’s word, but it’s actually more of an old guy with headaches word. It’s just nice to say.

Verily

It’s fun to say and sounds almost gilded, like an antique of a noble time. Tolkien made me a fan of this word, and the odd looks one gets when one uses it in conversation is almost worth getting pegged as being pretentious.

Vulnerable

Just love hearing this word when the L is pronounced. To clarify, a lot of people say “vun-ruble,” but I prefer “vuL-nerable.”

Voluptuous

The word itself is soft and velvety on the tongue, like a flower blooming in the palate; one grasps instantly the resonating pleasure it allows for the senses, as well as for the mind.

It means “evening prayers” or “evening star.”  James Bond’s first love in Casino Royale is also named Vesper Lynd.

Veridical

This word can be used to compare the integrity of seemingly dissimilar conceptualizations. To say that A is veridical means that A does not contain internal contradictions. If A is veridical with B there are no contradictions in (A+B) and the tenets expressed in A either support or are in agreement with those of B.

“The religious astrophysicist views the theories of evolution and creationism as ‘veridical’.”

When “spiteful” and “abusive” just aren’t strong enough, good old vituperative comes in to save the day. The concept of “vitumen” just always seemed scarier, meaner, and more foriegn than so many similar, kinder words — like “venom” and “vitriol.” It has also always been in my experience one of the most obscure negative words, and thus it holds an especially warm place in my personal lexicon.
