Tertiary

Third in a series - primary, secondary, tertiary. We hear “primary” and “secondary” constantly, but when was the last time you heard anyone mention “tertiary?” I use this word whenever I can find an excuse to.

I get a kick out of the way the ’s-k-s’ sounds in this word as well as in flasks, etc.

Turquoise

Because it has that deep first syllable, that exquisite twist in the middle, and then it rhymes with “poise.” (I also love the stone it stands for, but as is often the case with me, I may love the stone because I love the word, at least as much as the other way around. For example, I can’t tell if I really love drinking Shiraz, or tasting the word.)

Compound of 2 Old English words: tungol (star) and wittigan (priests). I think it’s much more “romantic” sounding than the Latinate astronomer.

Tentacle

Saying it conjures for me a perfect image of a mass of tentacles flowing out to grasp their prey. I think it’s something to do with the undulating rhythm of the word. Also, it’s just a tasty word on the tongue.

Thixotropic

My favorite word is thixotropic (sometimes spelled thixiotropic) which describes a solid or gel that has becomes fluid when disturbed such as jello or ketchup.

The pronunciation feels crunchy to the ear, I enjoy saying it.
