Twig

I love this word because every time I hear it it brings a smile to my face. it sounds so much like what it is. I hear twig, I picture something small and, well, twiggy! More so, this site didn’t have Twig on its list, so I had to post it.

It’s my absolute favorite legal word. It is basically someone who does something bad and the word just brings that to mind!

Triskaidekaphobia
Triskaidekaphobia comes from the Greek words ‘Tris’ (three), ‘Kai’ (and), ‘Deka’ (ten), and ‘Phobia’ (fear). Literally translated it means the fear of the number 13. It is my favorite word because not only is it a beautiful and fun word to say, but also because it is thought to come from a Norse legend of Loki, the god of mischief (and also the 13th god). In this legend there is a party, and Loki tricks another god, Baldr (the 13th guest to arrive a this party), to accidentally kill his brother. This is where we get the superstition that when 13 are gathered together, one will die in the coming year. I also enjoy this word because it’s mere existence just makes the world so turned around. Some buildings don’t have 13th floors. Some airplanes don’t have 13th seats. It’s so silly!

Translucent

Light passes through - diffused, transparent, frosted. Maybe our effervescent woman drinking her effervescent drink is wearing a flowing dress that almost looks translucent. These are both just beautiful sounding words!

Tintinnabulation

I love the it rolls off of my tongue. It also elicits many questions from my students as to it’s meaning. I encourage them to look it up and come back later and tell me what it means. Since I teach band I quite often experience tintinnabulations.

Twain

Not as in Mark Twain, though that does give it a big plus. It means two things that are a pair or that are similar. Chances to use it don’t exactly come up often, but I love letting it slip.

Tertiary

This word follows the sequence: primary, secondary, tertiary. I like it because of the way that it sounds. I also like it because 3 is my lucky number, and this is a fancy way of saying ‘third.’
