Eclectic

When I was a teenager the mother of one of my friends said I was “an eclectic.” I knew what the word meant as an adjective but had never heard it used in that (unusual) way. I have long considered that one of the best compliments I’ve ever received.

Egregious

It’s shocking, outrageous and conspicuously bad. Well, the word isn’t, but what it describes is.  I love the ‘ous’-ness of the word.  And the middle two syllables that sound like a heavy metal object being dragged, screeching along a concrete floor. And my wife told me she heard of a book called I Always Look up the Word “Egregious”. And it just tastes good on the tongue.

Electric

When I hear the word, I just imagine bolts of lightning striking the sky. It is such an energetic word that is totally filled with life. And then, in a flash, it’s all gone.

Eyeballing

It’s amusing that you can turn most nouns into verbs in English. I like this one especially in contexts, where it’s opposed to having the computer check something.

Extraneous

It is a really awesome way of saying “extra” or “irrelevant.” Plus it is just incredibly fun to say, and most people actually don’t know what it means – but they think they should know, so they go along with it.

It starts so softly. It fits frequently in phrases. Nearly no one knows it. However, it’s not my favorite anymore.

Flexanimous

Most online dictionaries give the definition as “having the ability, or power, to change the mind,” but I like a more literal interpretation: “mind bending” (flex + animus).
