Betwixt

From Old English/Shakespearean: In an intermediate position; neither wholly one thing nor another. Why? Because it makes people smile. Who doesn’t love words with the “x+t” combination? I always receive positive responses when I use this word.

Butternut

Until about five minutes ago when I googled it, I had no idea what a butternut was or how it looked. When I was younger and used to read books about the American Civil War, I remember always pausing for a moment when the Confederate uniforms were described as ‘butternut grey’. It always seemed like such a warm, yummy color. I pictured the butternut as being sort of cold, hard, and gray, but the insides being some sort of a golden paste ideal for spreading on hot toast.

Now that I’ve looked it up, I’m sort of disappointed. It’s a squash.

Berkle

I love the sound of the word. Plus I berkle quite a lot of things! It means to make a situation worse by trying to make it better.

I love that there’s a word for the noise caused by gas moving through your intestines, and that it’s so onomatopoetic!

It has a ring and says exactly what I wish to convey! Much better than ‘Bah, Humbug’!

Byzantine

The word is a tautology unto itself. It suggests complexity, architectural and artistic style, religious mystery, ancient charm, a poem by William Butler Yeats and my ultra-cool trip to Istanbul back in 1996!

It’s like a flower, soft, tender, rounded and silky. What can I say, I love to say it.

It popped up during an episode of Psych I was watching with friends. The moment they said the definition we just looked at each other and laughed. Who knew there was a word for having the qualities of butter?

Bloodlust

A big, black and sinful desire for bloodshed can’t be expressed in a better way, except by this wonderful word: bloodlust. It’s violence, strength, wildness and a bit of lust, pure energy.

Greetings from Chile, South America!
