Meaning calmness untroubled by mental or emotional disquiet, it’s a perfect word for a mind-settling rest.

Just for the hell of it. Until I got WD verification, I was mostly sure I’d made it up.

It reflects what I like most about existential philosophy. Authentic is how I try to live my life, how i judge people and things, and really just a cool quality to think about. What makes something authentic? Plus authenticity sounds like what it means, to me.

Absolutely

The word absolutely is simply so assertive. It’s like perfect and absolute … even saying this word makes me feel very confident. It’s like ‘Its absolutely true, what else?’

For one thing it sounds lovely. Also, the word and its meaning have absolutely nothing in common, making it something of a mystery to most. The word, and any of its representations, are beautiful to look at. So we now have all the requirements fulfilled: lovely sound; curious meaning; beautiful to behold. What more can be asked of any word?

Apoplectic

Easy to say, not easy to be… And sometimes it almost appears to be “me.” Some of the drivel i see and hear on TV. Oh me oh my! Makes me feel so “angry.”

Each week it was the bonus word on each spelling test when I was in 3rd grade. The teacher told us, “Whoever spells it correctly first this year will get a prize.” I spelled it correctly on the 11th week of school.

Asylum

Its dual meanings/connotations: as a place of safety and respite, and as a dark, creepy prison of psychopaths. I love the sound of the word, and the letters. The “syl” is a cool combination of letters, as is “lum” and “asy.” It’s an awesome word in every aspect.

Acrid

Acrid. Acrid! A word that is simultaneously expressive, descriptive, and powerful to say. The word is a sharp reprimand, clearly expressing shock and disdain. You can almost catch a whiff of the offending stench as you say it. It’s odd that such an elegant word as this is used to describe such an odious thing!

I love this word! I was brought up in England and it was used frequently — to mean ancient, decrepit, really old. Often in a derisory manner. I use it now in the US and have to explain — literally “before the flood” (think Noah), and then people go wow — of course, what a great word.
