wist·ful (wstfl)
adj.
1. Full of wishful yearning.
2. Pensively sad; melancholy
Firstly I just think this is a beautiful word to say, it sounds quite fragile and delicate, which is perfectly reflected in its meaning.
Secondly, I love the picture of contrasting sadness and hope it paints. It reminds me of when I had exams at school, and they always seemed to take place during the height of summer, on the warmest, sunniest days imaginable. I’d alternate between bouts of furious scribbling and long periods spent gazing wistfully out the window at all the kids who’d already finished their exams and were basking smugly in the sunshine. I wished D’s on them all.
