Perpendicular

Just say it out loud. If you didn’t know the meaning of the word, what would you THINK the word meant? It certainly doesn’t sound like two lines that intersect at 90 degrees. To me, it sounds like it should mean something like “exuberant.” Hey, that’s another great word!

  I really hate to disappoint you, but “perpendicular” doesn’t mean that. It means “vertical”. There’s no sense of a crossing horizontal line involved.

  It is a great-sounding word though, and it would be kind of neat if it did mean “exuberant”!
