I love the way it just rolls off the tongue, and the funny thing about that is, it’s a sore inside your mouth. Usually obtained from chewing tobacco over long periods of time. I don’t chew tobacco, I don’t smoke tobacco, but I do quite enjoy saying the word leukoplakia. Pronounced lew-koh-PLAY-kee-uh.

Actually it’s not a sore in the mouth; it’s a white, thickened patch or plaque on a mucous membrane. Sometimes the cheek, sometimes the tongue. I do love that it’s so wonderfully self-explanatory: leuko- (white) plakia (plate or flat plane). Heaven help us, there does exist oral hairy leukoplakia. I don’t even want to know.
