This word is simply amazingly fun to say. It means “a retail dealer in men’s furnishings, as shirts, ties, gloves, socks, and hats.” I enjoy telling my friends that they have on some nice haberdashery today.

Great word! I bowl with a 79 year old man who introduced that word to my vocabulary. I use it regularly.
The meaning is actually different in the UK. A haberdasher is someone who sells small sewing supplies, such as buttons, sequins, thread, ribbons and zips. The UK definition doesn’t include being a Men’s outfitter.
In the UK it has a different meaning. A haberdasher is someone selling buttons, zips, thread and other sewing paraphenalia. Nothing to do with men’s outfitting over here.
I agree that it’s fun to say! I first encountered the word when I was reading about Harry Truman – he owned a haberdashery but his business failed. I was surprised to year it the other day on a show my kids watch – iCarly. There was this angry nefarious kid who wanted to grow up to be a haberdasher.
