Favorite Word: Ãiti
Why?: This word, meaning “mother” in Finnish, is so charming partly because unlike its equivalents in so many other languages, it doesn’t follow the mom-mama-mamma pattern. “Ãiti” sounds like a child’s cry, but can also be whispered gently. According to a theory it originates from baby babbling, “ättättätä”; no matter how old you are, you become a baby again when calling for your mother.
