Favorite Word: Juxtapose
Why?: To juxtapose two objects is to place them side by side, especially for contrast or comparison. When my sophomore English teacher first used it in class, I thought he meant that to juxtapose is only to place things next to one another in order to contrast them. However, when it came to my attention that the word applies to situations of comparison AND contrast, the word just became magical to me. Not only can I avoid using the words “compare and contrast”, which reek of highschool essay prompts, but being able to say that two things are juxtaposed is somehow more expressive (and easier)than saying they “are clashing and/or harmonizing with one another in interesting ways while in close proximity”.
