It’s that G at the beginning. The sound of the word fits its meaning somehow, but that G enables it to conjure up images of mis-shapen trees and terribly old men, so well that I find it oddly funny. Hope it’s not just me!

Oh you described it so well, I wasn’t sure what that image I was getting in my head at the sound of this word – “gnarly” but it’s so true, mis-shapen trees and terribly old men.. oh terribly old men with terribly yellow teeth too! Gnarly, I say!
