Autochthonous

au-toch-tho-nous –adj. 1. Originating where found; indigenous: autochthonous rocks, people, folktales.

First word that came to mind (followed by “balderdash” in a near dead heat). I just enjoy its sound and its unwieldy nature. It’s such an unlikely word, and yet quite useful.

I like the word balderdash better. Meaning senseless, stupid or exaggerated talk or writing; nonsense

Somehow I got this root word “chthon” associated with ancient evil, like H. P. Lovecraft stories…. probably because the evil monsters in his stories were supposed to have been here before we were, hence they were autochthonous …

@Ross – The H.P. Lovecraft beast was Cthulhu…not sure they’ve got the same root.
