Scintilla

A word meaning “a very small amount; a shred,” it comes from the Latin word for “spark” and is often used in the law world to describe evidence. I like it because it is so fun to say, with the smooth hiss at the beginning to the pop in the middle and the end rolls right out afterwards. In addition it is a very useful word.

Ataxia

When I overheard the doctor say I had ataxia, I wondered if it was some serious disease. I looked it up – it just means clumsiness, in that case, a result of concussion.

Gurkle

Gurkle is a word that can sum up just about any funny situation. When in doubt, I say, “That’s gurkle!” and no one can argue that. I think the word originated from someone mispronouncing Steve Urkel’s name.

Conundrum

I first heard this word when I was in high school when a (very smart) friend used it to explain another word for a riddle or puzzle. I’ve loved it ever since. Plus it’s fun to say!

Respect

The word respect is important to me because you need to feel respected. If you don’t feel respected then no one will respect you. Respect means an assumption of good faith in another person or in the whole of oneself. To me respect means to have an admiration for someone and or yourself. You see, I have been disrespected and I had to find out the hard way how to respect myself. My last relationship I was getting beat because I wanted to live life. I let a man slap me around because I didn’t respect myself. I had to get tough and start worrying about myself and get out of a bad relationship. I did and ever since I have been living my life to the fullest and I respect myself more than you can think of. I love me for me so I don’t need to get loved by no one else.

Nostalgia

I guess because nostalgia runs my life. “A bittersweet longing for things, persons, or situations of the past.” Pretty much describes me. Always looking to somehow get back everything I’ve lost. And it’s just a beautiful word. Really.

Runt

I love this word. It’s so direct and to the point. It reminds me of a litter of pups or kittens and the runt is always the nicest. Plus it reminds me of one of my best friends, we call each other runts!

Flexanimous

Most online dictionaries give the definition as “having the ability, or power, to change the mind,” but I like a more literal interpretation: “mind bending” (flex + animus).
