LiterallyThis was literally one of the first big words my daughters learned to use correctly (and impressively) at a young age. I’ll never forget how proud my oldest daughter was to pepper conversations with this word — or my shock at her usage. I find that this word is used incorrectly so often that I can’t like it any more. It’s a pet peeve of mine. People seem to use it as a magnifier when really, it’s the opposite of figuratively. I heard a sportscaster say that one team had literally mopped the floor with another team. Um, no, they didn’t.
