Until about five minutes ago when I googled it, I had no idea what a butternut was or how it looked. When I was younger and used to read books about the American Civil War, I remember always pausing for a moment when the Confederate uniforms were described as ‘butternut grey’. It always seemed like such a warm, yummy color. I pictured the butternut as being sort of cold, hard, and gray, but the insides being some sort of a golden paste ideal for spreading on hot toast.
Now that I’ve looked it up, I’m sort of disappointed. It’s a squash.
