Berkle

I love the sound of the word. Plus I berkle quite a lot of things! It means to make a situation worse by trying to make it better.

Each week it was the bonus word on each spelling test when I was in 3rd grade. The teacher told us, “Whoever spells it correctly first this year will get a prize.” I spelled it correctly on the 11th week of school.

Smorgasbord

A massive feast or selection of edibles. It always makes me think of vikings sitting around a long table drinking mead out of skull mugs and gorging themselves while invoking the glories of death in battle and reaching Valhalla. Gluttony, sweet indulgence after death and deprivation, roast farm fauna, the drippings that come after the spoils of war. By the hammer of Thor, all good berserkers like a good smorgasbord.

To make clear; to shed light on. A very pretty way to describe “explanation.”

I like the sense that it’s relative, if not subjective.

Asylum

Its dual meanings/connotations: as a place of safety and respite, and as a dark, creepy prison of psychopaths. I love the sound of the word, and the letters. The “syl” is a cool combination of letters, as is “lum” and “asy.” It’s an awesome word in every aspect.

It just rolls off my tongue so nicely. I like the way it sounds. I don’t like what it means, though. When I listen to someone’s lungs and I can hear them whisper in my stethoscope it means they probably have pneumonia.

Skunk

My favorite word is “skunk” because it makes me laugh whenever I hear or say it. I’ve had a few narrow escapes over the years from skunky annointings, and I guess it amuses me to think back over them. It just sounds funny. Say it aloud a few times. I’m sure you’ll agree with me.
