Sluice

As a noun, a sluice is a floodgate. As a verb, to sluice means to wet or to wash with running water. The way the word sluice sounds fits its meaning perfectly. The way the word sluice slides and slaloms off the tongue just makes the word a little more descriptive. It’s almost an onomatopoeia. It moves off the tongue in a way that always reminds me of running water.

When I grew up in Alaska, my father fancied himself a bit of a treasure hunter and liked to take us to pan for gold. He would bring home buckets of dirt from tailing piles behind abandoned gold dredges and run them through a sluice box in our back yard. We spent hours sluicing dirt and picking out gold flakes with Q-tips! Great word, brings back many memories…
