Tentacle

Saying it conjures for me a perfect image of a mass of tentacles flowing out to grasp their prey. I think it’s something to do with the undulating rhythm of the word. Also, it’s just a tasty word on the tongue.

Silver

A lovely word for a lovely colour, one that I use to describe things that are both pretty and cold. Icicles are silver. New York City is silver.

Zeugma

My favorite word is zeugma because it’s a nice-looking word, and because of the wordplay involved. I work with several writers who try unknowingly to use examples of zeugma (”She stole my heart and my money”) but fail at it. It’s a tough thing to master.

Rapport

Because it’s the first truly mysterious word I ever heard in conversation. I still remember who said it me. The word conjures intimacy and warmth and harmony. It’s comes from the French. The sound of music and art and love pours from rapport almost instantly. If you have it with someone, something or an entire audience, you have traveled without leaving home and made contact in the most beautiful way.

I have a fondness for this word. Why? First of all, the possibility of seemingly unconnected events being aligned by unseen universal forces to bring about a significant occurrence is irresistibly intriguing to me. Second, it rolls off of one’s tongue in a delightfully mysterious manner. Pronouncing synchronicity makes those who say or listen to its five syllables feel a bit apprehensive, as if they’ve stumbled onto a secret they weren’t supposed to know. Third, it holds the distinction of being cleverly explained in lyrical form by one of my favorite 1980s rock band, The Police. They sang:

“…A connecting principle
Linked to the invisible
Almost imperceptible
Something inexpressible
Science insusceptible
Logic so inflexible
Causally connectible
Yet nothing is invincible

If we share this nightmare
Then we can dream
Spiritus mundi

If you act, as you think
The missing link
Synchronicity

We know you, they know me
Extrasensory
Synchronicity…”

Ukelele

My favorite word is “ukelele” because it cracks me up. I wish I knew why it was so funny. It’s just one of those words that always makes me smile, no matter what kind of mood I’m in. And it’s so fun to say out loud! You can’t help but smile.

I like this word because it’s often a good substitute for the word “incredible” which is so overused, and so inaccurately used. Very few things are really incredible, but many are extraordinary.

My favorite word is juxtaposition. Reason: j and x both go together perfectly.

Love

My favorite word is love.

It has around 28 different definitions in the dictionary but when defined by the heart, our human language fails.

The memories and thoughts provoked by the word and the feelings that arise. The smile and sometimes the tears that come with the word. No matter how many times a heart can falter it still gets back up and seeks after this word. Love.

Sycophant

It means “a servile flatterer.” How many times have I had this very thought about someone, and wasn’t able to elegantly sum it up in one word, until i stumbled upon sycophant (and fun to say!).
